INDIAN SPRINGS — The Wells baseball team was silent for much of the Division 1A Nevada State Baseball Championships.

But the Leopards provided fireworks in the opener — trailing 7-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and forcing extra innings — walking off with an 8-7 victory over Liberty Baptist.

Wells was then bounced on the next day, losing consecutive contests by margins of 12-3 to eventual champion Indian Springs and 9-5 against Smith Valley.

Vs. Liberty Baptist

The Leopards fell behind 6-0 on a three-run homer by junior Noah McConnell — who had Wells bamboozled at the plate — and trailed 7-2 with two outs in the home half of the seventh.

Freshman Landon Hall scored on a double by junior Luis Garcia, junior Gage Uhlig wore a pitch, as did senior Cesar Berumen.

Garcia crossed on a passed ball, and junior Teagan Calton ripped a two-run double to right-center field — driving in Uhlig and Berumen — making the score 7-6.

Sophomore Charley Peterson tied the game with a single to left field — scoring Calton — and forced extra innings with the game deadlocked 7-7.

From the bullpen, Berumen escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth with his second punchout of the frame.

In the bottom half, Wells once again rallied with two away.

Junior Tristen Zimmerman was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single on the ground to left by Garcia for an improbable 8-7 win.

Zimmerman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored the game winner.

Garcia went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI — including the clincher — and crossed once.

Calton hit 1-for-3 with a two-run double and came around once, and Uhlig batted 1-for-3 and came home twice.

Peterson was 1-for-4 with an RBI that forced extras.

Without hits, Berumen, Hall and junior CD Hunt scored once apiece.

Zimmerman allowed an unearned run on with two walks and a punchout over two innings.

Berumen posted a scoreless frame to close, struck out two and walked one.
